How it works

Reverse engineering in one chat

A digital product is the solution to a problem, and search engines are where people type their problems. So instead of starting with what you want to make, the Skill starts with what your buyer is already looking for and builds the product backward from there.

This is the Help phase of my HIKE Design™ framework, the first step I teach inside Empowered Business Lab® AI. No topic yet? The Skill starts with a short content pillar warm-up so you have something to search for.

01
Who, what, and how

It asks who you most want to help, the number one problem they are struggling with, and what kind of usability tool would help them most. One question at a time, and it pushes back when an answer is too broad.

Setup
02
Turn the problem into searches

Together you write 3 to 5 phrases your buyer would type: a short main word, a format search, and a question or two.

Keywords
03
Scan four search engines

With web search on, Claude runs the scan itself across Google, Etsy, YouTube, and Pinterest and reports back what is selling, what people are asking, and where the gaps are. Without it, the Skill tells you exactly what to look for and you paste in what you find.

Evidence
04
Brainstorm and rank 5 to 8 ideas

Every idea is tied to specific search evidence, then ranked by how strong that evidence is and how doable it looks to build first.

Ideas
05
Pick the one you can finish

It asks which idea feels most doable for you, then sorts the rest into your main product, a free opt-in, and ideas for later.

Decide
06
Walk away with a plan

A concept plan for the idea you chose and a copy and paste summary you can carry straight into building the product.

Why I teach it this way

Search results changed my plan

I prefer spreadsheets. But when I searched the budgeting topics my audience cared about, the results kept showing me that people love budgeting printables, so I built my free opt-in around printables instead of what I would have picked.

Later, the search queries already bringing people to my own website showed me an audience I had never served on purpose: single moms looking for help with a budget. I took a budget spreadsheet I had already validated and reworked it for them. That is reverse engineering. You stop asking what you feel like making and start reading what people are already asking for.

What you walk away with

A concept plan you can start on tomorrow

The session ends with two things you can keep: a short concept plan for the idea you chose, and a summary table you can paste anywhere you plan your products.

Part one

Your concept plan

  • A working title and the format it takes
  • The transformation, what changes for your buyer, because that is what sells the product
  • What goes inside, 4 to 7 sections shaped by what the search showed was missing
  • Your human touch, the one or two things only your experience can add
  • A free opt-in idea that leads into it
  • One next step to take in the next 48 hours

From the original

Thousands of creators used the first version

Before it was a Claude Skill, the Reverse Idea Finder was a custom GPT in ChatGPT. Here is what people said about that original tool, in their own words.

It was amazing how detailed the concept plan was. And I love that it asked me which idea I felt was most doable first. I worked on it, created a product, posted the product and made a sale on it the very next day! So exciting!

I was surprised at how many other new branches I could take for my area of expertise. I thought I had almost tapped out on what new ideas I could come up that were related to the original core offering but I now have another 9 ideas some of which are really easy to implement so thank you!

I thought I already knew my target audience and how to package it but this gpt just made everything so crystal clear!

Made for scheduled tasks

Keep your idea pipeline running every week

Search behavior keeps moving after your first session. When you finish, the Skill offers to write a weekly scheduled task prompt for you, built from your own customer, problem, and keywords, so Claude keeps watching your topic without you starting over.

Each week it
  • Searches the keywords from your session
  • Flags new People Also Ask questions
  • Spots new competing products
  • Adds fresh ideas to a running list

Needs a Claude plan that includes scheduled tasks. The Skill itself works in any Claude chat.

The questions I would ask

Do I need an audience already?

No. The method starts with the person you want to help and what they search for, not with your follower count. If you do have an audience, asking them directly is a strong signal to add later, and the Skill will tell you so.

I don't even know which topic to pick. Will this still work?

Yes. Tell it you are stuck and it starts with a short warm-up: your three main content pillars, the subtopics inside one, and the very first thing someone would search when they realize they need help. That first search becomes your starting point.

Does Claude search for me, or do I have to do it?

If web search is turned on in your Claude chat, the Skill offers to run the scan itself and reports back what it finds. If not, it tells you exactly what to look for on Google and Etsy and you paste in what you see, messy is fine. Either way, it never makes up search data. It also suggests you do at least one search yourself, because Etsy and Google's People Also Ask often do not come through fully in a web search.

Is this the same as the Reverse Idea Finder GPT?

It is the same reverse engineering method, rebuilt as a Claude Skill. It keeps the parts people loved, like being asked which idea feels most doable before anything gets planned, and in Claude it can run the search scan itself when web search is on, then keep watching your keywords as a weekly scheduled task.

Will it tell me my idea is guaranteed to sell?

No, and I would not trust a tool that did. It shows you the evidence that people are searching for something and helps you pick an idea you can finish. A live search through Claude is a sample, not the full picture, so check the results on each platform yourself before you build.
